When Somalia is mentioned, images of war, poverty, and hunger come to mind. But there is another side to Somalia, a humanitarian aspect that emerges in times of crisis. In 2011, Somalia experienced the worst famine the country had ever witnessed. Millions of people were starved and impoverished, and thousands of children died of starvation.
At that time, a group of young Somalis formed a relief team to provide assistance to the affected people. The team distributed food, water, and medicine to the people.
One of the stories that highlights the humanity in Somalia is that of a woman named Sarah. Sarah is a Somali woman living in a refugee camp in the capital, Mogadishu. When the famine struck, Sarah lost her husband and two children to starvation.
But instead of despairing, Sarah formed a group of women in the camp to provide assistance to the affected people. The group distributed food, water, and medicine to the people and even turned one of the camps into a school for children. Sarah’s story is a humanitarian story that emerges in times of crisis. It is a story of courage, cooperation and teamwork, and Sarah is now considered one of the most important human rights activists with the Global Conscience Organization for Human Rights in Somalia.
